Laura & Derrick Martin

I love my job!!! This is not really a job, but a passion of mine. It is that, because I want all our members to know a little about where they are going before the next meeting.

You will love this month’s destination for many reasons. First, it is very close to last month’s location. Secondly, you will be amazed at all there is to see. Thirdly, you will get to meet Pete (more about him later).  Fourthly, I doubt you have seen 3 different train set-ups out in the open. Finally, you will see a beautiful 6500-gallon pond lined with brick.

Laura and Derrick were high school sweethearts at Mira Mesa and have been married for 39 years. Originally, they were both involved in teaching, then went in different directions. For years, Derrick was a general contractor (evidence is everywhere you turn), then got into real estate and landscaping. Laura became a stay-at-home mom to their 2 kids.

They live in a home once described as “that ugly place on Espola Road”. Now, nothing could be farther from the truth. For 33 years they have created, made, and changed every dimension of the 1 ½ acre property.
From the eight-foot welcoming Sasquatch at the driveway entrance, to the Quilt Shop to the left of the entry, to the numerous buildings around, there is space to walk around and just “look”. You need not worry about off-street parking, as there is room for 20/25 cars.
Getting back to Pete, he is a 15-year-old African Sulcata Tortoise. His home is a very large enclosure that you will walk past getting to the pond area. About 7 years ago, a friend of their son, D.J., was going off to college and Pete needed a

home. The couple spent lots of time and money to welcome the adoptee, including a heated den. Be sure to take notice of his unusual shell.

Derrick, who easily falls back on his construction talents, has created a welcoming entertainment area around the pond. His long-time friend, Carlos Araya who owns Moi Masonry, loves working with Derrick especially when they dream up a new plan. Derrick enjoys creating surprises in the most unlikely places.

There could be something new around every corner.

A few years ago, the Martin’s daughter, Katie, was getting married in the yard. She was worried that her parents would get a Port-a-Potty for the yard. Her dad surprised her by building 2 full unique toilets for the guests. Be sure to peek inside them when you pass by. The brick work is amazing.

Derrick has a somewhat new love affair with trains. He thinks they are cute and decorative and move around. He even built a water tower above the pond to create the image of the flowing water filling the pond. He takes great pleasure in creating villages and people around the trains in the yard.  Similar to our Koi Club, they belong to the San Diego Garden Railway Society, where everyone shares their joy in seeing and learning.

Laura is a skilled and avid quilter. There are several of her pieces hanging on the walls in the house. Together, she and Derrick made her a quilting room with every amenity she could want including large, organized storage closets. (I am so jealous!)

As a couple they enjoy doing things together. Their weekly “date night” is taking a baking class at the local adult school. This offers a challenge because neither one feels they are proficient, but they must work together.

Separately, Derrick has been taking Art classes for 12 years at Poway Adult School. Laura also takes quilting classes with a group in Ramona. She has been lucky enough to travel in different parts of the country to do quilting retreats. Their life is full, and their world is a delight to see.

We hope to see you on September 14th. Remember to bring a dish to share along with your chairs. There will be canopies to hide the sun. You will have fun enjoying all that you see.

From the President's Pond

Hello everyone,

This past weekend, the San Diego Koi Club had the pleasure of gathering at the beautiful home of Norm and Natasha Turoff for a very enjoyable meeting. Their stunning koi pond, perfectly nestled in their backyard with a sweeping view of the golf course, provided a serene and inspiring setting for koi talk, laughter, and camaraderie.

Their collection of koi was impressive, and the pond itself was a reflection of the care and passion that true hobbyists bring to this craft. As I stood admiring the pond—and the view—I couldn't help but notice their sparkling swimming pool just a few feet away. I’ll admit, by the end of the meeting, I found myself wishing I had taken a quick dip before heading out. Maybe next time!

Looking ahead, don’t forget to mark your calendars for September 20, when we’ll be holding our annual Koi Auction. This is a fantastic opportunity to bring home some beautiful koi, both large and small, at great prices. Whether you're new to the hobby or looking to add to your existing collection, this event is not to be missed.

Thank you again to Norm and Natasha for hosting such a wonderful afternoon. See you all at the September meeting and just to be clear, I am always wearing my swimsuit!

I’ve said (written) it before, I really enjoy that our monthly meetings and the chance to visit other’s pond, even if it is one you have been to before, it seems that there are always changes worth seeing.

Until next time, keep your ponds clear, your koi happy, and your butt in a chair enjoying both!

Warm regards,

Cory Burke

Vitamins and Minerals

So, this is the last section for my koi nutrition series.  Some may be glad it’s finally over.  Oddly enough this area can quickly turn into a heavy science nerd project, which I promise to try to avoid (mostly).  Vitamins are SO essential and required to complete a host of body metabolic functions and processes.  They are divided into water soluble and fat soluble.  The fat soluble (A, D, E and K) can be stored in the liver and other koi tissues, when supplied in excess of daily requirements.  Water soluble vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B5, B6 B12, C, Biotin Choline, Folacin and Inosital) are required DAILY as they are not stored within koi tissues.  For this area of koi nutrition, I’m not going to booooor you with daily requirements by body weight or the list of deficiency signs you can observe  - but for EACH vitamin deficiency there are observable signs and some can mimic other koi health problems.  For example: (forgive me) Thiamin deficiencies can be mistaken for organophosphate (insecticide) poisoning or Biotin deficiency can look like an external parasite or bacteria infestations to include a blue to gray color slime over the skin or scales of your koi.  Crap, I just can’t help myself -Deficiencies in the B’s leads to a host of issues to include:

    • Thiamin (B1): Aids in nerve function, digestion, and reproduction.  A lack of thiamin may cause skittishness, poor coloration, and paralysis of the fins.
    • Riboflavin (B2): Aids in absorption of oxygen in tissues with a poor blood supply. Deficiencies can cause cataracts, sensitivity to light, and bleeding from the nostrils and gills.
    • Niacin (Nicotinic Acid B3): Aids greatly in growth. A lack of this vitamin causes stunting.
    • Choline, Pantothenic Acid (B6), and Pyroxidine: All three of these vitamins are essential for the proper metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. Too little of these vitamins cause problems ranging from lack of appetite to reduced growth to internal hemorrhaging.
    • Folic Acid and Cyanobalamin (B12): Both of these vitamins are important for blood cell formation; deficiencies can cause anemia and lack of appetite.

Vitamin A - deficiencies have been associated with fin congestion, skin hemorrhages exophthalmia (pop eye), blindness and fading colors to name a few.  Finally, a deficiency in vitamin C and or A  can manifest itself with deformed gill opercula - hum - I wonder if this could include the constant turned out positioning of the soft tissue at the end of the gill plate (just a thought as I see this a lot).   After reviewing multiple scientific articles about fish and vitamins not one gave any credit or comment concerning vitamin intake being diffused through the gills, only by ingestion.  Two general facts for the backyard ponder:  1. A lot of science has been completed on the vitamin requirements of fish and most if not all major koi food makers have the daily vitamin requirements covered (read your koi food ingredients list – they will vary) and number 2. THE BEST THING YOU CAN DO TO PRESERVE VITAMINS IS TO STORE YOUR KOI FOOD IN AN AIRTIGHT DARK COLORED CONTAINER, IN A DRY AND COOL STORAGE AREA!!!  Of course this is true for all the ingredients in your koi food, but vitamins have proven to be the first to degrade with time, moisture and temp.  For me – I check for dates on the food I buy and want to use it all within 60 to 90 days of purchase.

Now on to minerals.  Koi mineral requirements include 14 in trace amounts and 7 in larger amounts and of course the water they are swimming in is a BIG factor as 10 of the above 21 minerals can be diffused through the gill membranes.  For the science nerd in us all, the mineral ion balance value determines if it can or cannot cross the gill membrane.  In fish aquaculture there are around 12 minerals that are normally included in diet formulation in different amounts for different fish species.   Freshwater fish DO NOT drink water (saltwater fish do) and koi are constantly eliminating excess water via the kidneys and other waste mainly via the gills.  Minerals play a key role in tissue formation and metabolic function and this is especially true in maintaining the osmotic balance between the koi’s body and the water it swims in.   Signs of possible mineral deficiencies include very little to no growth, anorexia, anemia, cataracts, muscular degeneration (wasting) and even fish loss.  As with vitamins, check the ingredients listing for your koi food and they vary.  Generally, you are looking for a source of phosphorus, magnesium, iron, zinc and yes copper.  Here again, based on existing science most if not all major manufacturers of koi diets have the daily mineral requirements covered, but there is variation.    When I have a question about vitamins and minerals (or any other food ingredient question) in any koi food, I ask the question of the manufacturers and in most cases I get a serious answer – but I have gotten, on a couple occasions, the answer to my question was proprietary in nature.  Just don’t ask the grade level of the MAIN ingredient white fish meal.  Oh well, I got the same answer when I asked for the ingredients in Coke Cola LOL.  The main sources of information for this short article included; AKCA Guide to Koi Nutrition II, Recirculating Aquaculture Systems by M. B. Timmons Et Al., and an article from the internet titled Feeding Koi and Goldfish by Stephen m Meyers.

This entire koi nutrition series was intended to touch on the main elements of the subject matter and to encourage further examination of the subject by those interested.  For additional info, I would recommend three possibilities 1. A web search on subject matter (check the author’s credentials); 2.  A nice overview is the AKCA Guide to Koi Nutrition II ; and for a more in-depth analysis of the subject I recommend you go to the website for Koi Organization International.

Over the last three months I’ve enjoyed doing this as one of my favorite koi subjects, and I hope you have learned something you can put to use or scratch your head about (say what) OR you may now have more confidence (after review of ingredients) that the koi food you buy has what your koi need to live long and healthy lives.
